Jesse Receives His First Shot!

<<

May 8, 2003

Hi friends and supporters-

Due in part to our persistent and overwhelming advocacy, as well as the resilience of attorney Bill Quigley, Jesse received his first shot of testosterone while incarcerated today!!! As his parents told me in an email tonight, "they reassured him that they ordered enough to last through his visit as a guest of the federal prison system."

So I am writing to thank you all for your powerful actions in support of the rights of all of the transgender, transsexual and genderqueer people who are incarcerated in the U.S. Working toward the liberation of any group of people directly implicates the biases that we must strive to overcome within ourselves and our communities when we envision or enact varied definitions of "liberation" for different groups of people. Our voices made clear to the U.S. federal prison system that we value the human rights of all people, and that we will not be silent until these rights are respected.

I spoke with Jesse this morning, and he said that he is fairly acclimated to the prison, although he was recently moved to a new cubicle with new roommates. Jesse also said that eight more weeks feels like a long time now. I hope that receiving his prescription will rejuvenate his body and spirits. Please continue to keep Jesse, as well as all people who are incarcerated in the U.S., in your hearts and in the powerful actions that you continue to take.

Take care and stay strong,
Sarah
