Jesse Carr is an activist, student and trans man. He served a three month federal sentence in womens' facilities connected to protest against the School of the Americas. During that time, friends, allies and supporters rallied to demand the prison meet Jesse's basic medical needs by continuing his hormone therapy of testosterone. This site offers a collection of writings Jesse and his key supporters distributed during his incarceration. It is offered here to record Jesse's remarkable voice and experiences, and to draw attention to the issues of political prisoners, the conditions of U.S. federal prison, and the lives of incarcerated transgender people. You can read more about the movement to shut down the School of the Americas on the website of School of the Americas Watch. It is a U.S. military project that trains Latin American soldiers in brutal tactics of repression. SOA-learned practices, such as torture, interrogation and assassination, have been used by death squads and military dictatorships against popular social justice movements. This site is designed and hosted by Michelle O'Brien. Michelle works in social services and political organizing with transgender people in Philadelphia. A collection of her recent writings on trans politics can be found on her site deadletters. |
